What are the different types of STAR Smog Stations in California?
Types of STAR Smog Stations
There are two types of STAR-certified smog stations. Both can perform STAR smog checks, but their services differ.
STAR Test Only Stations
STAR Test Only centers are authorized to:
Perform smog inspections only
Conduct both regular and STAR-required smog tests
Inspect all DMV-required vehicles
They are not allowed to perform any smog repairs. Their role is to provide a non-biased, inspection-only evaluation, making them ideal if you want a purely independent test.
STAR Test & Repair Stations
STAR Test & Repair stations are authorized to:
Perform STAR smog inspections
Perform regular smog inspections
Diagnose and repair emissions-related failures
Certify vehicles after repairs are completed
These stations are the only facilities allowed to inspect, repair, and certify any and all vehicles, including those participating in the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP). STAR Test & Repair stations are inspected by the State of California on a regular (often monthly) basis.
If the DMV requires a STAR smog check, either station type is acceptable.
