STAR Smog Station vs. Regular Smog Station: What’s the Difference?
Not all smog stations are the same.
A regular smog station can perform inspections for most vehicles, but it is not authorized to inspect vehicles that the DMV has flagged for STAR certification.
A STAR smog station, on the other hand:
Is certified under the state’s STAR Program
Is subject to enhanced monitoring and performance audits
Must meet higher accuracy and compliance thresholds
Can inspect vehicles specifically designated by the DMV
If your renewal notice says STAR required, visiting a non-STAR station will result in a rejected test.
