What Is a STAR Smog Check?

A STAR smog check is a standard California smog inspection performed at a STAR-certified smog station. STAR stations are monitored more closely by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) and must meet strict performance, accuracy, and reporting standards.

When the DMV requires a STAR smog check, it is simply directing you to complete your inspection at one of these higher-oversight facilities.

The inspection itself follows the same emissions standards as a regular smog check—the difference lies in where the test is performed, not how your vehicle is judged.
