What does “Pass or Free Retest” mean for a smog check?

“Pass or Free Retest” means that if your vehicle fails the smog inspection, the shop will give you one free retest after you’ve repaired the vehicle — usually within a certain time frame (commonly within 30 days).
You still pay for the first test, but the retest is free if your car doesn’t pass and you return within the shop’s allowed window.
